There are currently an estimated 90,000 killer whales left between all their known locations. The conservation status of these whales is considered to be endangered due to how few this number is. 

As with any population status, it is nothing more than an educated guess from researchers, scientists, and those who study a specified animal. Each year the population of any given animal changes due to births, deaths, new species, environmental changes, and more.
