OOG cargo is any cargo that cannot be loaded into a standard six-sided shipping container simply because it is too large, or the cargo's shape (protrusions etc) will not fit the rectangular container's dimensions.
Some examples are large machinery and / or parts, wind turbines, or as we managed earlier this year... Chinook helicopters!
Planning and execution are paramount when handling OOG cargo, if it is not secured or lashed correctly, damage can occur to the cargo or other cargo loaded nearby. Before the OOG cargo is even loaded onto a vessel, an extensive amount of planning is required to identify the optimal lifting technique / plan to ensure the cargo is loaded efficiently, safely and with no damage to the cargo or other equipment.
