CSX Transportation has launched a rail service connecting the Port of Virginia to Indianapolis, offering US East Coast shippers an intermodal alternative to routing via the Port of New York and New Jersey.

The Virginia Port Authority said Friday that CSX is now offering Indianapolis as an inland destination from the port. CSX will offer a five-day service from the Virginia International Gateway (VIG) terminal to its international container transfer facility in Indianapolis.

Outside of the VIG, the only other international intermodal service to Indianapolis is from the NY-NJ port marine terminals, which offer a comparable five-day transit time. VIG has on-dock access for both CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway.

VIG handles five of the seven Asia services that call Norfolk, with the other two handled at Norfolk International Terminals. Ocean Alliance services are the primary users of the VIG.

The Indianapolis international container service from VIG joins other CSX intermodal services from that terminal to Chicago, Ohio, Detroit, East St. Louis, Kansas City and Louisville.

Virginia has seen an uptick in import volumes through the first half of 2026, thanks to frontloading by shippers. The port’s import volumes were 766,668 TEUs through June, according to PIERS, a sister product of the Journal of Commerce within S&P Global. That’s up 4.9% from the comparable 2025 period and better than the 2.7% mid-year import drop seen across all East Coast ports.
